Documents Required for Court Marriage in Nepal: The Complete 2025 Checklist

Documents Required for Court Marriage in Nepal: The Complete 2025 Checklist

The most common reason for delay in marriage registration is missing or incorrect documents. The District Court is extremely strict. Even a small spelling mistake in your name or an expired visa can cause your application to be rejected instantly.

To ensure your process is smooth, we have compiled the definitive list of Documents Required for Court Marriage in Nepal for both Nepali citizens and foreign nationals.

1. Documents for Nepali Citizens (Both Parties)

If both the bride and groom are Nepali citizens, you must prepare the following legal documents. Note that Originals are required for verification, and Notarized Copies are required for submission.

  • Citizenship Certificate (Nagarikta): You must have the original citizenship card. If the card is old or torn, get a duplicate before applying.
  • Unmarried Certificate (Avibahit Pramanpatra): This is the most critical document. You must obtain a "Single Status Recommendation" from your local Ward Office (Woda Karyalaya).
  • Note: The certificate must address the "District Court" and should not be older than 30 days.
  • Passport-Sized Photos: 4 copies of auto-size photos for both the bride and groom.
  • Temporary Stay Letter (Asthai Basobas):
  • Rule: If your citizenship is from outside Kathmandu (e.g., Chitwan or Pokhara) but you want to marry in Kathmandu, you must get a "Temporary Stay Letter" from the local Ward Office in Kathmandu showing you have lived here for at least 15 days.

2. Documents for Foreign Nationals (Foreigner + Nepali)

If one partner is a foreigner, the documentation is more complex. You cannot just use your passport; you need permission from your government.

  • Original Passport & Valid Visa: You must have a valid visa (Tourist or Business). The visa must not expire during the process.
  • No Objection Letter (NOC): This is mandatory. You must visit your country's Embassy in Nepal (e.g., US Embassy, Indian Embassy, Chinese Embassy) and get an official letter stating you are free to marry.
  • Note: This letter must be translated into Nepali and notarized.
  • Proof of Stay (15 Days): The court requires proof that you have been in Nepal for 15 days. Your arrival stamp on your passport usually serves as this proof.
  • Marriage Laws of Your Country: Sometimes, the court may ask for a translated copy of the marriage laws of your home country to prove you are of legal age.

3. Documents for Witnesses

You cannot get married alone. You need two witnesses (one for the bride, one for the groom) to be physically present in court.

  • Original Citizenship: Witnesses must be Nepali citizens. They cannot be foreigners.
  • Age: Witnesses must be over 18 years old.
  • Relationship: They can be friends, family, or relatives.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Name Mismatch: Ensure your name on the "Unmarried Certificate" matches your "Citizenship" exactly (letter for letter).
  2. Notarization: Do not just photocopy documents. Every photocopy must be signed and stamped by a registered Notary Public.
  3. Old Documents: The Unmarried Certificate is valid for only 45 days in most courts. Do not bring a recommendation letter from 6 months ago.
